Awards honor employees who work together to promote university goals

Durham, NC -- To many at Duke University, what Linda Belans has done in gathering employees’ stories from the Civil Rights Movement and in promoting diversity has made the university a better place.
To her, it’s just how she thinks life should be lived.
“It’s wonderful to win this award, but it’s strange to be rewarded for just living my life,” said Belans at the Nov. 1 luncheon honoring this year’s employee winners of the Diversity and Teamwork Awards.
The Diversity Award recognizes a staff or faculty member who has demonstrated respect and value for differing backgrounds and points of view. Teamwork Awards honor units whose cooperation helps the university by solving difficult problems or advances the university mission.
"The Teamwork and Diversity Award luncheon is always a highlight for me," Duke University President Richard H. Brodhead told participants at the luncheon. "Partly it is because the food and conversation is wonderful. But more importantly, it is because this luncheon pays tribute to values we hold dear.”

Director of Health Art Network at Duke (HAND) for her work in using the arts and humanities to celebrate the diversity of Duke.

Carol Spruill:
Associate dean, Public Interest and Pro Bono in the Law School, for her work in developing pro bono law opportunities that benefit a diverse population.
Teamwork Awards

In 2005, the Teamwork Awards went to staff who worked together to admit students from colleges affected by Hurricane Katrina and to an inpatient satisfaction team at Duke Health Raleigh Hospital. The Diversity Awards went to biochemistry professor Kenneth Kreuzer, Department of Medicine administrator Marsha Newby and Graduate School Associate Dean Jacqueline Looney.
