Three teams of Duke researchers have been awarded small grants by the National Academy of Sciences Keck Futures Initiative to support conferences on interdisciplinary research about aging and healthspan -- the period of life that is free from serious or chronic illness.

Anatoli Yashin of sociology, Keith Meador of the Center for Spirituality, Theology and Health, and Elizabeth Ann Gerken Hooten of psychiatry will work with colleagues at N.C. State and the University of Virginia to bring together experts from many fields including orthopedic medicine, biomedicine, spirituality and wellness to focus on improving health care personnel diversity and culturally competent care.

Ilene Siegler of psychology and neuroscience will organize a conference with colleagues from Oregon State, Oregon Health and Science University and Boston University to work toward integrating longitudinal studies on aging.

Nan Jokerst of electrical and computer engineering will join colleagues at the National Institute on Aging and the University of Wisconsin to look for engineering solutions to extending human healthspan.
