Three Duke Nursing leaders have been elected to the American Academy of Nursing (AAN), the academy announced on June 28.

This year's class includes Susan M. Schneider, associate professor at the School of Nursing; Kevin W. Sowers, chief operating officer and interim CEO for Duke University Hospital and clinical associate at the School of Nursing; and Michael Relf, incoming assistant dean for undergraduate education at the School of Nursing, effective August 1.

"The recognitions of the career accomplishments of these faculty are well deserved, and we are proud of them," said Catherine L. Gilliss, dean of the School of Nursing and academy president-elect.

Ninety-two nurse leaders will be inducted as fellows during the academy’s 35th Annual Meeting & Conference on Nov. 8 in Scottsdale, Ariz. The American Academy of Nursing is constituted to anticipate national and international trends in health care, and address resulting issues of health care knowledge and policy. Not only is the invitation to fellowship recognition of one's accomplishments within the nursing profession, but also affords an opportunity to work with other leaders in health care in addressing the issues of the day.

The AAN comprises more than 1,500 top nursing leaders from education, management, research and practice sectors.
