The Duke University Police Department provides comprehensive law enforcement to the entire university system, including the academic campus, Duke Medical Center, 8,000-acre research forest and a variety of satellite facilities. The department operates a 24-hour 911 center and has, among other divisions, a staff of criminal investigators. Police officers also patrol areas adjacent to campus and are commissioned under North Carolina law with the same authority as municipal police agencies.
